About Ugadi
Ugadi (Telugu and Kannada) and Gudi Padwa (Marathi) mark the Hindu lunar new year on the first day of Chaitra. Chaitra Navratri begins on the same day.
How it is observed
Homes are cleaned and decorated; Maharashtrian families raise a gudi (decorated pole) and Telugu and Kannada families share Ugadi pachadi, a dish of six tastes representing life’s experiences. The new year’s Panchang is traditionally read.
